WWAMI offers 24 summer students an overview of medical careers
by Kathleen McCoy |
WWAMI, Alaska's Biomedical Program, recruiting statewide, brought 24 students from rural, underserved and Alaska Native student populations to the °µÍøÊÓƵcampus this summer. These students participated in three pathways programs designed to lead them to biomedical and medical health careers: Della Keats, U-DOC and the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK).
For six weeks, these talented and capable Alaska students came to campus for a high school/undergraduate instructional/transitional experience, one that will continue to support them during their undergraduate years.
While on campus, students are exposed to a plethora of learning experiences. They include but are not limited to written and oral communication skills, an introduction to °µÍøÊÓƵsupport programs and organizations, conducting job shadows, listening and viewing presentations from pre-med health clubs to Doctors Without Borders, taking courses in biomedical ethics, anatomy and physiology, exposure to public health issues and touring medical health facilities -- while still having time for fun, like kayaking and camping.
